Tasmanian Jock Goodyer captured his second SCCA Australian Sprintcar Championship on Saturday night at the Borderline Speedway after leading all 40-laps in the City of Mount Gambier supported event. In what proved to be a dominant display Goodyer was never really challenged throughout the race although outgoing National Champion James McFadden put in a late challenge, but he simply ran out of laps as Goodyer held on to win by just over 2 seconds.

“The fans out there tonight and the fans all the country are the reason I keep doing this. Their support for me and our team is simply amazing. I can’t believe we have won the Australian Championship again. I am thrilled that I will be able to carry the number 1 on the car again, the whole team deserves this result” added Jock following his Championship victory.

After being the top qualifier Queenslander Ryan Newton held on to finish third, after being passed by McFadden on lap 24, while Lockie McHugh was a distant fourth. Young Victorian Todd Moule was outstanding all weekend as he completed the top 5, while Dayne Kingshott, Daniel Pestka, Parker Scott, Kaiden Manders and Marcus Dumesny rounded out the top 10.

Daniel Sayre, Matthew Dumesny, Joel Heinich, Tim Hutchins, Luke Storer and Jessie Attard were the final finishers.

The only real incident of the main event occurred on lap 12, when Brock Hallett and Jordyn Charge made contact coming out of turn four while battling for sixth, with the contact ending the Championship hopes for both drivers. The incident concluded a tough night for Hallett who was forced just to ride around in his final heat race after damaging his nose wing after contact on the start of heat 15, due to Michael Keen losing the driveline in his W16 on the start.

Following the 10 heat races on night 1 the remaining five heats were conducted earlier with a total of 44 cars fronting for action on night 2. Of the drivers who elected not to compete on night 2 the most notable were former New Zealand Champion Max Guilford and Peter Doukas, who were involved in a scary heat accident on night 1, Matt Egel, who rolled in Friday’s B-Main, Ryan Jones, who had engine issues, Western Australian Callum Williamson, Tasmanian Ethan Wyllie and Victorian hard charger Jordy Rae.

Heat winners of the five heats were Randy Morgan, Marcus Dumesny, Tim Hutchins, Matthew Dumesny and Jessie Attard.

Charismatic Queenslander Kinser Claridge was the winner of the C-Main and transferred to back of the B-main along with fellow Queenslanders Brodie Davis and Kevin Titman and Tasmanian Chad Gardner.

As with the previous night the B-main provided the best racing of the night with 18 drivers vying for the final 4 spots in the Championship decider. After starting from position 10, due to his DNF in his opening heat on night 1, former Australian Champion Marcus Dumesny produced an outstanding performance to claim the win. Second went to Tasmanian veteran Tim Hutchins with Sprintcar rookie Brad Vaughan and Jessie Attard claiming the final two spots.

For Vaughan it was a great recovery as prior to the field forming up to take the green the drivers were instructed to hot lap the track, and during the short hot lap session Vaughan had his right rear tyre deflate. With the race officially yet to begin he was allowed to change the tyre and retain his fourth starting position.

After leading for 12 of the 20-lap journey Broken Hill racer Brendan Guerin failed to transfer after losing several spots late in the race, resulting in a sixth-place finish. Therefore Guerin, and Queensland’s Brodie Davis, who finished fifth, were the two reserves.
